LiDAR is moving from cars to robots

AI · not reviewedWritten with AI from the sources listed, not yet editorially reviewed.

Chinese makers are shipping robotics LiDAR in record volumes while a Western pioneer had to give up — shaping prices and suppliers for vision projects.

The essentials in four points

  1. Hesai shipped 142,371 robotics LiDAR units in Q2 2026, up 193% year on year; total shipments were 628,275 units (company figures).
  2. RoboSense sold 282,600 LiDAR units for robotics and other applications in H1 2026 (up 510%) and cites more than 3,400 robotics customers; applications include lawn mowers, delivery and cleaning robots (company figures).
  3. Hesai cites collaborations with more than 50 embodied AI companies worldwide, including Unitree and Galbot.
  4. US maker Luminar filed for Chapter 11 on 15 December 2025 after Volvo terminated its contract; the case filings also cite price pressure from Chinese suppliers.

What this means for businesses

For inspection, warehouse logistics and mobile robots, LiDAR sensors are widely available and deployed at volume — mostly from Chinese suppliers. In tenders, check delivery capability, spare parts and export controls as carefully as range and resolution, and plan a second supplier for critical infrastructure.
