Humanoids in production: what the 2026 pilots show
AI · not reviewedWritten with AI from the sources listed, not yet editorially reviewed.
The first factories in Europe, the US and China are using humanoids — for narrowly defined tasks, with measurable but still small numbers.
The essentials in five points
- According to Figure AI, a Figure 02 robot at BMW’s Spartanburg plant (US) helped build more than 30,000 BMW X3s over about ten months, moving over 90,000 parts in roughly 1,250 operating hours.
- In Leipzig, BMW’s first European site to do so, the company is testing Hexagon Robotics’ AEON humanoid in high-voltage battery assembly; the pilot phase starts in summer 2026.
- UBTech reported its 1,000th Walker S2 at the end of 2025 and more than 500 units delivered; customers include BYD, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen and Foxconn (company figures).
- According to Omdia, around 13,000 humanoids were shipped worldwide in 2025, most of them by Chinese makers; market leader AgiBot shipped an estimated 5,168 units.
- Agility Robotics reports more than 65,000 operating hours for Digit across nine customer sites, including GXO, Schaeffler and Toyota (vendor figures).
What this means for businesses
In 2026, humanoids are a tool for narrowly defined, repeatable handling — loading, sorting, feeding parts — not for entire lines. If you want to start now, plan a pilot cell with clear metrics (cycle time, error rate, availability) and check the safety requirements of the EU Machinery Regulation, which applies from 20 January 2027.
