About the category
What it is
Depth and 3D cameras deliver not only a colour image but also the distance of each pixel — via stereo vision, structured light or time-of-flight. Robots use this to recognise the position and shape of objects, and vehicles their surroundings. Many models come with an SDK, some also with their own AI processor.
What companies use them for
- Bin picking: recognising and grasping randomly arranged parts.
- Measuring the volume and dimensions of parcels and parts.
- Obstacle detection for mobile robots.
- People and gesture recognition for interaction and safety.
What to look for when buying
- Measuring principle and working range: near or far, indoors or outdoors.
- Depth accuracy and resolution for the smallest relevant details.
- SDK, ROS 2 driver and support for your operating system.
- Connection (USB, Ethernet), ingress protection and mounting.
Integration & effortEffort: medium
The camera delivers images quickly; the effort lies in calibration, lighting and the analysis software that turns depth images into grasp points or dimensions. Ready-made software exists for bin picking, but integrating it into the robot cell remains project work.

Simulation
How it runs in your operation
A simplified, typical sequence — not a recording of a real deployment.
The camera records colour and depth at the same time.
Software finds the parts and calculates their position.
The robot moves to the calculated grasp point.
Success is checked and missed grasps are reported.
Brokering
How brokering works
- 01Request
Add the product to your request and tell us quantity, goal and timing. Free and without obligation.
- 02OROBO checks and obtains the quote
We check your need and intended use, screen buyer and seller against EU and US sanctions lists and obtain the quote from the manufacturer or its dealer. Your contact details only go to the seller with your consent.
- 03You buy directly from the manufacturer or its dealer
Contract, payment, delivery and warranty run directly between you and the seller. OROBO is neither seller nor importer and does not accept payments for goods.
Free for you: the seller alone sets the price. OROBO may receive a commission from the seller — on request we tell you whether and how much; it influences neither recommendations nor order. For now we broker for buyers in the EU, the EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Terms § 6b · Disclosure
