China installs three in five industrial robots — and controls the magnets

AI · not reviewedWritten with AI from the sources listed, not yet editorially reviewed.

The IFR 2026 report shows China’s lead in robots while the EU falls back; at the same time, the supply chain depends on Chinese export licences for rare earths.

The essentials in four points

  1. In 2025, 603,000 industrial robots were installed worldwide (up 11%), 354,000 of them in China — 59%; the global operational stock reached 5 million for the first time.
  2. Chinese manufacturers accounted for 55% of installations in their home market; China’s automotive industry reached a record 78,900 robots.
  3. In the EU, installations fell 11% to 60,500; Germany remains the largest EU market with 24,842 robots, but 8% below the previous year. The US overtook Japan with 38,400.
  4. China’s export controls on seven medium and heavy rare earths, including permanent magnet materials (since April 2025), remain in force; tighter rules from October 2025 are suspended only until 10 November 2026.

What this means for businesses

For robotics, China is at once the largest market, a growing supplier and a key source of magnets for motors and actuators. If you source robots from China or with Chinese components, secure lead times, spare parts and licence risks in your contracts and watch the situation after 10 November 2026.
