About the category
What it is
LiDAR sensors use laser pulses to measure the distance to a very large number of points and build a 3D image of the surroundings. Robots and vehicles use them for orientation and obstacle detection; in surveying, they produce digital models of buildings and facilities. Unlike cameras, they work largely independently of ambient light.
What companies use them for
- Navigation and personnel protection for AMRs and mobile robots.
- Capturing halls, buildings and facilities in 3D (scan-to-BIM).
- Measuring bulk material volumes and stock levels.
- Traffic and people counting, zone monitoring.
What to look for when buying
- Range, field of view and point density to suit the task.
- Accuracy and behaviour in rain, dust or on reflective surfaces.
- Safety certification if the sensor is meant to protect people.
- Drivers, ROS 2 support, interfaces and laser class.
Integration & effortEffort: medium
The sensor is quickly mounted; the effort lies in calibration, time synchronisation with other sensors and the software that turns point clouds into decisions or models. Safety functions are subject to their own standards and acceptance tests.
Software that fits
- Point Cloud Library (opens in a new tab)Open source · BSD-3-ClauseFilters, segments and registers point clouds, for example from LiDAR.
- Open3D (opens in a new tab)Open source · MITLibrary for processing and visualising 3D data and point clouds.
- CloudCompare (opens in a new tab)Open source · GPL-2.0Views, compares and measures large 3D point clouds.
- ROS 2 (opens in a new tab)Open source · Apache-2.0Standard framework for connecting sensors, control and your own algorithms across vendors.

Simulation
How it runs in your operation
A simplified, typical sequence — not a recording of a real deployment.
The sensor sweeps the surroundings with laser pulses.
The measurements form a 3D image.
Detect obstacles, take measurements, find deviations.
The robot navigates safely, or the model feeds into planning.
Brokering
How brokering works
- 01Request
Add the product to your request and tell us quantity, goal and timing. Free and without obligation.
- 02OROBO checks and obtains the quote
We check your need and intended use, screen buyer and seller against EU and US sanctions lists and obtain the quote from the manufacturer or its dealer. Your contact details only go to the seller with your consent.
- 03You buy directly from the manufacturer or its dealer
Contract, payment, delivery and warranty run directly between you and the seller. OROBO is neither seller nor importer and does not accept payments for goods.
Free for you: the seller alone sets the price. OROBO may receive a commission from the seller — on request we tell you whether and how much; it influences neither recommendations nor order. For now we broker for buyers in the EU, the EEA, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. Export rules may apply to this manufacturer’s products; export licences are the seller’s responsibility.
